![The zoea (zoeal pl.) is a free-swimming larval stage of crustaceans. It follows the nauplius stage, and precedes the post-larva. Zoea larvae swim with their thoracic appendages (as opposed to nauplii, which use cephalic appendages, and megalopa which use abdominal appendages for swimming). It often has spikes on its carapace which may assist these small organisms in maintaining directional swimming [1]. In many decapods, due to their accelerated development, the zoea is the first larval stage. In some cases the zoea stage is followed by the mysis stage and in others by the megalopa stage, depending of the crustacean group involved. ![Unlike the adult animal this larva of a hermit crab (Anomura or Anomala, a group of decapod crustaceans) lives pelagic and without the shelter of an empty shell of a snail. One pair of legs has pincers, the right one being much stronger than the one on the left side. This kind of asymmetry is quite common in crustaceans. The different size and shape of pincers indicate different function and performance. ![Macrocypridina castanea are unmistakeable 'chocolate drop' ostracods with. shells about 7 mm long. Macrocypridina lives at depths of 800 m, where residual daylight is very weak. It has a pair of mobile apposition compound eyes with large lenses, wide rhabdoms and high acceptance angles, all of which contribute to a calculated sensitivity comparable with the superposition eyes of deep-water decapod crustaceans. The axes of the 27 ommatidia in each eye are not uniformly distributed in space, with a modest acute zone in the anteroventral region. Here the interommatidial angles are about 6°, compared with 20° at the rear of the eye. ![[captive] Larval Prawn, (Plesiopenaeus armatus, synonym: Cerataspis monstrosus), penaeid shrimp. The larvae Cerataspis monstrosa has heavy armor, a thick body and exceptional horn ornamentation. Described as “monstrous and misshapen animal,” it is the preferred meal for its predators such as skipjack, yellowfin and blackfin tuna and dolphin. The origin of Cerataspis monstrosa has been a mystery for more than 180 years. For nearly two centuries, researchers have tried to track down this larva that has shown up in the guts of other fish over time but found no adult counterpart. 2012 it is discovered that the “monster larva” and the deep-water aristeid shrimp known as Plesiopenaeus armatus are one in the same: larvae and adult forms of the same species. Phronima are only seen in the wild at great depths. Phronima are carnivorous; they eat small plankton. P. sedentaria often uses dead salps for housing. Phronima served as an inspiration for the design of the Xenomorphs of the Alien film series.
