![Phronima, the pram bug amphipod, is a small, translucent deep-sea hyperiid amphipod of the family Phronimidae. It resembles a shrimp with a head, eyes, jaws and clawed arms. Phronima are only seen in the wild at great depths, usually by submarine crews, and are usually only about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long. Phronima are carnivorous; they eat small plankton. <br />

The eyes of the adult Phronima are a further feature of wonder in an animal already beset with extraordinary habits and adaptations. It has compound eyes, like most crustacea and insects, but unlike most it has four, not two. Each pair of eyes is situated on the side of the head. The outer and inner eye of each pair are actually in contact with each other. The outer eye is surrounded by a lozenge-shaped ball of eye-facet lenses commanding an enormous field of view - perhaps 270 degrees. One pair of eyes keeps a constant watch on the world ahead, whereas the other pair views the surroundings through the transparent walls of its temporary home. <br />

![Unlike the adult animal this larva of a hermit crab (Anomura or Anomala, a group of decapod crustaceans) lives pelagic and without the shelter of an empty shell of a snail. One pair of legs has pincers, the right one being much stronger than the one on the left side. This kind of asymmetry is quite common in crustaceans. The different size and shape of pincers indicate different function and performance. ![Many female olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) are swimming from the open ocean towards the beach of Ostional, Costa Rica, Pacific Ocean to gather for an arribada (mass nesting event). They are not very shy and curiously probe the photographer's equipment. They feed on a broad selection of floating organism - and unfortunately may as well bite into or even swallow plastic depris or fishing hooks. [size of single organism: 80 cm] | Schwimmende Oliv-Bastardschildkröten (Lepidochelys olivacea) sind nicht sehr scheu und nähern sich neugierig unbekannten Objekten. Offenbar sind sie in Bezug auf Nahrung durchaus experimentierfreudig. Das daraus resultierende breite Beutespektrum mag ihnen zugute kommen – fataler Weise führt es aber auch dazu, dass sie große Mengen an Plastikmüll oder auch Angelköder mit Haken verschlucken und häufig daran zu Grunde gehen.
