![Many female olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) are swimming from the open ocean towards the beach of Ostional, Costa Rica, Pacific Ocean to gather for an arribada (mass nesting event). They are not very shy and curiously probe the photographer's equipment. They feed on a broad selection of floating organism - and unfortunately may as well bite into or even swallow plastic depris or fishing hooks. [size of single organism: 80 cm] | Schwimmende Oliv-Bastardschildkröten (Lepidochelys olivacea) sind nicht sehr scheu und nähern sich neugierig unbekannten Objekten. Offenbar sind sie in Bezug auf Nahrung durchaus experimentierfreudig. Das daraus resultierende breite Beutespektrum mag ihnen zugute kommen – fataler Weise führt es aber auch dazu, dass sie große Mengen an Plastikmüll oder auch Angelköder mit Haken verschlucken und häufig daran zu Grunde gehen. ![Unlike the adult animal this larva of a hermit crab (Anomura or Anomala, a group of decapod crustaceans) lives pelagic and without the shelter of an empty shell of a snail. One pair of legs has pincers, the right one being much stronger than the one on the left side. This kind of asymmetry is quite common in crustaceans. The different size and shape of pincers indicate different function and performance. ![The deep sea viperfish (Chauliodus sloani) is approx. 30 cm long and lives within the upper 1000 m of the water column. During day they prefer deeper water layers while they actively ascend at night. Their numerous light emitting organs help on the one hand to attract prey, on the other hand they serve as a camouflage when seen from below against the light coming in from the surface. Its enormous teeth enable the viperfish to securely grab its prey. This is essential as in the deep sea encounters are very rare and each chance has to be taken. However, if the viperfish bites a prey item that is too big to be swallowed, the inward-bent teeth make it impossible to let go, which may well mean the end to both parties involved. This has only lately been revealed by scientists. The black dragonfish shines on its prey to see it without the prey even noticing that it is floodlighted – and without ringing the dinner bell for other predator species. ![[captive] Deep Sea Amphipod (Cystisoma neptuni) has a transparent body, with the exception of the stomach and its compound eyes. They may feed on on soft-bodied animals. “See and NOT be seen” seems to be the life motto of the deep-sea amphipod Cystisoma neptuni. The segments of its highly-specialised compound eyes collect rays of light in crystalline cones and lead them to the tips of light-guiding tubes that are connected to the optic nerves. Its transparent body prevents the crustacean from being detected and caught by predators. It is only visible thanks to the special lightning in my photo aquarium.
