![Male deep-sea anglerfish. Common among deep-sea anglerfish is the strong sexual dimorphism in melanocetids: while females may reach a length of 18 centimetres or more, males remain under 3 centimetres. After a larval and adolescent free-living stage, they spend the rest of their life parasitically attached to a female. [size of single organism: 20 cm] | Tiefseeanglerfische männchen. Dieses ca. 2 cm große Exemplar gehört zu der Gruppe der Tiefseeanglerfische. Es gibt einen starken sexuellen Dimorphismus. Während Weibchen eine Länge von 18 oder mehr Zentimeter erreichen können, bleiben Männchen bei Längen von unter drei Zentimetern. Nach der Metamorphose von der Fischlarve in das adulte Tier beginnt das Männchen mit Hilfe seiner Augen und des gut ausgebildeten Geruchssinnes ein Weibchen zu finden. Hat es eines erreicht, beißt es sich an diesem fest, die Kiefer des Männchens bilden sich danach zurück und die Haut beider Tiere verwächst, ebenso die Blutgefäße. ![This deep sea amphipod genus is particularly renowned for its house-building. This transparent organism feeds upon free-living, planktonic sea squirts and salps. It devours the internal soft body parts of its live prey and is then left surrounded by a tough, transparent husk of tunicin. It is this outer casing that it then modifies to form an open-ended barrel, the final shape of which is particular to the species of Phronima and the salp in question. This macabre activity seems to be conducted by the female amphipods, and in time eggs or hatchlings are deposited as a saddle on the inner wall of the barrel. Here they remain and grow, aerated by a constant flow of water that moves through the barrel as the female swims through the water column. With advancing age comes the spirit of adventure and juveniles start to stray from their brood site towards the margins of the barrel. ![Phronima, the pram bug amphipod, is a small, translucent deep-sea hyperiid amphipod of the family Phronimidae. It resembles a shrimp with a head, eyes, jaws and clawed arms. Phronima are only seen in the wild at great depths, usually by submarine crews, and are usually only about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long. Phronima are carnivorous; they eat small plankton. <br />

The eyes of the adult Phronima are a further feature of wonder in an animal already beset with extraordinary habits and adaptations. It has compound eyes, like most crustacea and insects, but unlike most it has four, not two. Each pair of eyes is situated on the side of the head. The outer and inner eye of each pair are actually in contact with each other. The outer eye is surrounded by a lozenge-shaped ball of eye-facet lenses commanding an enormous field of view - perhaps 270 degrees. One pair of eyes keeps a constant watch on the world ahead, whereas the other pair views the surroundings through the transparent walls of its temporary home. <br />

They may feed on on soft-bodied animals. “See and NOT be seen” seems to be the life motto of the deep-sea amphipod Cystisoma neptuni. The segments of its highly-specialised compound eyes collect rays of light in crystalline cones and lead them to the tips of light-guiding tubes that are connected to the optic nerves. Its transparent body prevents the crustacean from being detected and caught by predators. It is only visible thanks to the special lightning in my photo aquarium. They possess a unique shoulder organ – a sac filled with luminescent fluid located behind the gills. When threatened, this fish can release the fluid to distract predators, similar to how octopuses release ink. This has only lately been revealed by scientists. The black dragonfish shines on its prey to see it without the prey even noticing that it is floodlighted – and without ringing the dinner bell for other predator species.
