![[captive] Lepidophanes guentheri, a species of the large group of lanternfish (or myctophid, family Myctophidae, 246 species, mykter = Greek for ‘nose’ and ophis for ‘serpent‘) shows a pattern of paired light-producing cells (photophores) located along the ventral sides and at the head. They serve to mask the fish by counterillumination and are used in intraspecific communication (shoaling, courtship). This rather small deep sea fish species (adult approx. 8 cm) performs diurnal vertical migrations: during daylight hours it can be found at depths of > 400m, at night it ascends to < 100 m. Its habitat is therefore the mesopelagic (or twilight) zone. The widely distributed and numerous species of the family of lanternfish account for a great part of the overall biomass of deep sea fish: about 65%. These creatures flutter through the water with their foot divided into two paddles. By storing carbon in their calcareous shells, they help the ocean absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. ![Melanocetus murrayi is a fish that has several English names: black deep-sea angler, Murray’s abyssal anglerfish or deepsea blackdevil . It usually lives at depths between 1000 and 2500 m, but has also been found more than 6000 m below the surface. This anglerfish is distributed in all oceans to latitudes of 65°. The typical feature of anglerfishes is a fleshy process near the mouth with bioluminescence bacteria. This is used as a lure to attract prey in the dark of the deep sea. Despite its monstrous appearance this female fish only grows up to a size of 12 cm. The male reaches a maximum length of 2 cm and lives parasitic, attached to a female.- Preserved specimen. ![The black dragonfish (Malacosteus niger) mainly preys on copepods. This species is among the small group of deep sea fishes that are able to emit red light and also to see it. This has only lately been revealed by scientists. The black dragonfish shines on its prey to see it without the prey even noticing that it is floodlighted – and without ringing the dinner bell for other predator species. Das rote Licht wird zunächt von einem speziellen .Antennenpigment absorbiert und in Form von Energie den Sehzellen .zugeführt. Dort können die auf blaues und grünes Licht empfindlichen .Sehpigmente die Information weiterleiten. ![The arrival of one olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) at the beach of Ostional, Costa Rica, Pacific coast, can be the beginning of an arribada (mass nesting event) of the sea turtles. Thousands and thousands of the 50 kilogram reptiles come ashore over a period of up to a week, only interrupted by the hottest midday sun, to bury their eggs in the warm sand. Common among deep-sea anglerfish is the strong sexual dimorphism in melanocetids: while females may reach a length of 18 centimetres or more, males remain under 3 centimetres.
