The deep-sea amphipod Epimeria loricata is an important food source for fish and whales and therefore a crucial member of the species community in the North Atlantic. The 15 millimetres small species has been described already in 1879 by the Norwegian zoologist Georg Ossian Sars whose interest focused on crustaceans. Today, amphipods are also investigated because their distribution might be impacted by changing climatic conditions in the Arctic.
Epimeria loricata lives about a year and molts several times to be able to grow. Males use their long antennae to locate females and stay attached to them until one of these molts. Directly after the molt, they transfer their sperm to the female which carries the eggs and, later on, the newly-hatched larvae in their brood pouch for some days.
