Melanocetus murrayi is a fish that has several English names: black deep-sea angler, Murray’s abyssal anglerfish or deepsea blackdevil . It usually lives at depths between 1000 and 2500 m, but has also been found more than 6000 m below the surface. This anglerfish is distributed in all oceans to latitudes of 65°. The typical feature of anglerfishes is a fleshy process near the mouth with bioluminescence bacteria. This is used as a lure to attract prey in the dark of the deep sea. Despite its monstrous appearance this female fish only grows up to a size of 12 cm. The male reaches a maximum length of 2 cm and lives parasitic, attached to a female.- Preserved specimen.
