Gaussia princeps female

This copepod with the Latin name Gaussia princeps is quite a giant when compared to other copepods. An average copepod may measure 1 to 3 mm, but this female pictured here was 27mm across the antennae. Besides their huge size these copepods produce impressive and effective bioluminescent effects, leaving behind a bright little cloud when they escape a predator with a strong stroke of the antennae. Copepods account for more than 60% of the overall biomass of marine plankton and they play a key role within the food web, standing between the level of phytoplankton and the larger predators. However, species of copepods not only live in the sea but also in freshwater. With approx. 14.000 species this is the most diverse group among the crustaceans. | Der Ruderfußkrebs Gaussia princeps (im Bild ein Weibchen) aus der Gattung Euchirella hat den charakteristischen Körperbau dieser Krebsgruppe mit den langen, seitwärts gerichteten Antennen. Ruderfußkrebse sind in der Nahrungskette das Bindeglied zwischen dem Phytoplankton und größeren Räubern im Meer. Sie stellen mindestens 60% der gesamten Biomasse des marinen Planktons. )
