Common toad, (Bufo bufo) waiting for insekts

Juvenile Common toad, European toad (Bufo bufo) waiting for insekts to eat on oak root. Kaltenhofer Moor, Kiel, Germany {Story behind the image: The picture of this juvenile common toad (Bufo bufo) was taken in the Kaltenhofer Moor in Kiel, Germany in early autumn when the toad was about 3-4 months old. To feed on small insects such as mosquitoes, these toads tend to sit on slightly elevated areas and are very active during daytime. This moss-covered root of an old oak tree offers optimal foraging grounds for the toad. Although the image does not appear to be highly illuminated, it was taken using three flashes. I had to bend down very deeply to take the photo. After the shot the toad disappeared and did not come back that day.} | Die Baumwurzel einer alten Eiche ist über und über mit Moosen bewachsen. Auch Pilze (Helmling (Mycena spec.)) wachsen vereinzelt auf dem modrigen Holz. Dies ist der optimale Lebensraum für eine junge Erdkröte, die hier auf Beute lauert.
