Namaqua Chamaeleon (Chamaeleo namaquensis) Namib Desert sand. Desert chameleon (Chamaeleo namaquensis)
Fog that originates from the closely located cold Atlantic Ocean settles down on the sand dunes of the Namib Desert over night. Many animals including fog basking beetles are specialised in collecting this water in the morning. Other animals such as the desert chameleon cover their demand for water by preying on these juicy beetles. This chameleon represents one of the larger predators in the Namib Desert. It is commonly found in small bushes or on pieces of wood where it is perfectly camouflaged. We had been examining bushes in the desert for two days until we finally found a chameleon. The photo was taken without using a tripod so that I could get the side view of the animal rather than capturing it from on top where it would easily blend with the background.
