Poppy bee (Osmia papaveris or Hoplitis papaveris)
Male poppy bees (Osmia papaveris or Hoplitis papaveris) usually emerge from their nests a few days before the females appear. They observe and patrol the nesting sites, ready to mate before the females dig new nests in the sandy soil, line them with pieces of petals from the common poppy (Papaver rhoeas) and lay their eggs for a new generation to develop.
