Deep-sea sea cucumber (Peniagone sp.)
Sea cucumbers – or holothurians – of the genus Peniagone are sometimes called “sea pigs” because of their shape and colour. In fact, they wander over the sea floor with paw-like appendages, searching for food with their snouts that are surrounded by tentacles. They take up the sediment together with any food it contains, digest organic particles and excrete indigestible material. Although the animals spend most of their lives at the sea floor, they are also able to swim: To escape danger, they wiggle through the water with twitching movements. Sea cucumbers belong to the echinoderms and are therefore related to sea urchins and starfish.
This specimen was retrieved from a depth of 2786 metres during an expedition with research vessel Sonne west of Norway on 25 June 2020. The picture was taken in cooperation with the Senckenberg Nature Research Society (SGN). “Seeschweine” werden Seegurken – oder wissenschaftlich: Holothurien – der Gattung Peniagone gelegentlich wegen ihres Körperbaus und ihrer Farbe genannt. Das Bild entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit der Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN).
