Die Tunikaten, zu deutsch Manteltiere, gehören erstaunlicherweise gemeinsam mit den Wirbeltieren zu dem Stamm der Chordaten. Ein dorsaler Nervenstrang kennzeichnet diese primitiv wirkenden Lebewesen als "höhere" Tiere.
