Poppy bee (Osmia papaveris or Hoplitis papaveris)

The poppy bee (Osmia papaveris or Hoplitis papaveris) is a wild solitary leaf-cutting bee that lines its nest with pieces of petals from the common poppy (Papaver rhoeas). Pollen and nectar are also collected from poppy flowers and stored inside the brood chamber to feed the offspring after hatching. To collect pollen, this genus of bees uses a special apparatus that consists of a dense bunch of hairs on their legs and body called scopa (Latin for “broom”).
