This pair of common European toads (Bufo bufo) has met during the migration to their habitual spawning lake. The much smaller male was lucky to find a female that did not already carry one or more mates, as the gender ratio in this species shows a strong excess of males. Thus a good grip, the amplexus, is the key to reproduction success and he will kick and croak at every daring rival. The female on the other hand is responsible for carriage – by land as in the water.
Each year in the early springtime many adult common European toads arrive at this small lake amidst the old trees of a mixed woodland. They just close their translucent haw, or nictitating membrane, over their eyes to protect them and they are ready to dive, looking for the ideal spot to place their egg-strings. For my part, I had to drive to the Solling in the Central German Uplands by car and laboriously dress in a dry suit to submerge in the 4°C cold water. | Erdkröten-Paar (Bufo bufo) im Laichgewässer Generell sind Arten besonders gefährdet, die eine grosse Zeit im Wasser.verbringen, sei das als Larve oder als Adulttier. Es ist leider noch nicht klar, wann und unter welchen Bedingungen es zum Ausbruch der Krankheit kommt. Dies dürfte von unzähligen Faktoren wie Eigenheiten der Amphibienarten, Klima, Umweltbedingungen, Habitateigenschaften etc. abhängen.
