Being a major part of the phytoplankton community, Coscinodiscus, like other diatoms, plays a role in carbon and silicon cycling in marine environments. When they die, their silica frustules sink to the seafloor, contributing to the marine silica cycle and sometimes forming diatomaceous deposits.
