[Digital focus stacking] Thaumatomyrmex atrox are rarely encountered ants of Neotropical forests. They are specialists predators on millipedes in the order Polyxenida. These millipedes are miniature porcupines which entangle potential predators with detachable barbed setae. Thaumatomyrmex cope with bristle millipedes by grabbing them with its specialized mandibles. The mandibles are composed of three long spines which allow handling of the millipedes without getting in contact with the bristles. Picture was taken in cooperation with the "Staatl. Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe".
