The Blue Button (Porpita porpita), a hydrozoan, consists of a colony of polyps, arranged around a gas-filled chitin float. It spends its life drifting at the ocean surface, feeding on plankton, fish eggs or small larvae and is preyed upon by other neustonic animals such as the blue dragon (Glaucus sp.) or the violet sea-snail (Janthina janthina). Neuston is a group of marine organisms that live directly at the sea surface and connect the deeper ocean to the atmosphere. It is threatened by climate change and pollution, as well as very recently by structures that are used to collect plastic litter from the ocean surface. Er verbringt sein Leben an der Meeresoberfläche treibend und ernährt sich von Plankton, Fischeiern oder kleinen Larven und wird von anderen zum Neuston zählenden Tieren wie der Blauen Ozeanschnecke (Glaucus sp.) oder der Veilchenschnecke (Janthina janthina) gefressen. Neuston ist eine Gruppe von Meeresorganismen, die direkt an der Wasseroberfläche leben und den tieferen Ozean mit der Atmosphäre verbinden. Es ist durch den Klimawandel und die Umweltverschmutzung bedroht, sowie in jüngster Zeit auch durch Konstruktionen, die dazu dienen, Plastikmüll von der Meeresoberfläche zu fischen.
