![[captive] Deep Sea Squid (Chiroteuthis mega) is characterised by enlarged, lidded photophores present at the end of the tentacular club. This one is eating a Lightfish (Ichthyococcus ovatus) (152) Atlantic Ocean, close to Cape Verde | Der Tiefsee Kalmar (Chiroteuthis mega) besitzt zwei lange und dünne Fangarme, die er meist wie eine Angel runter hängen lässt. Am ende dieser Fangarme befindet sich jeweils eine große Photophore, ein Leuchtorgan als Köder. Hier hat der Kalmar einen Leuchtfisch (Ichthyococcus ovatus) erbeutet. ![Magnapinna atlantica, previously known as "Magnapinna sp. A", is a species of bigfin squid known from only two specimens collected in the northern Atlantic Ocean. It is characterised by several unique morphological features: the tentacle bases are narrower than adjacent arm bases, the proximal tentacle lacks suckers but possesses glandular structures, and the animal's pigment is contained mostly in functional chromatophores. [size of single organism: 10 cm] | M. atlantica was described in 2006 by Michael Vecchione and Richard E. Young. The holotype, deposited in the National Museum of Natural History | Der Tiefseekalmar der Art Magnapinna atlantica hat einen ungewöhnlich breiten Flossensaum an seinem Mantel. Researchers belive that cock-eyed squid uses its larger eye to see ambient sunlight, and its smaller eye to detect bioluminescence from prey animals.
