Poppy bee - Osmia papaveris
47 images Created 15 Sep 2020
The poppy bee (Osmia papaveris or Hoplitis papaveris) is a leaf-cutting bee that depends on petals of the common poppy (Papaver rhoeas) to build its nest. Pollen to feed its offspring is usually also collected from the poppy, as well as the corn flower (Centaurea cyanus). Because of this specialisation, this endangered species can only be observed in a few locations where extensive farming is practised. One such example is the village of Kemmern, Bavaria, home to one of the last known poppy bee populations in Germany.
