  • By-the-wind Sailor (Velella velella) is a rafting pelagic marine organism with a triangular sail. Always floating/sailing on the sea surface. The deep blue colour of Velella is due to peculiar pigments (astaxantine) that defend the colony from the sun light. Velella is not a single animal, but it is colony. • As soon as it entered the water the young Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) struggles against the swell to swim away from the coast. The so-called swimming frenzy lasts for approximately 48 hours to keep the hatchlings from being washed ashore. The turtles do not feed within the first days as they live on the reserves they acquired from the yolk in their eggs. The swimming hatchlings often fall prey to e.g. fregate birds or larger fish.

  • Sargassum Fish (Histrio histrio) near the surface on floating Sargassum Weed, Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia, Pacific Ocean [ Sargassum fish (Histrio histrio)<br />
This anglerfish commonly occurs in the open sea and is closely associated with the floating Sargassum Weed. It is perfectly disguised in carpets of sea weed where it waits for prey organisms that actually seek shelter there. A patch of Sargassum Weed was floating by our boat after one of our dives near Raja Ampat and we jumped back into the water to look for the fish. The main challenge in photographing this animal really was to find it. It took many people and a lot of time to finally find one – although we were systematically looking for it. This animal has the size of a fist and was very well hidden in large algae carpets of 10 m x 15 m. ]
