![[captive] This female paper nautilus or argonaut (Argonauta argo) belongs to the group of octopuses (Octopoda). The shells of the paper nautilus are formed only by the females and serve as containers for their eggs. Paper nautiluses not only exhibit the typical sexual separation seen in cephalopods but also display extreme sexual dimorphism, with the females being several times larger (dwarf males). Fertilization in most octopuses occurs through a specially modified arm of the male known as the hectocotylus. Unlike other octopuses, the hectocotylus completely detaches from the male's body during copulation, becoming an autonomous fertilization unit. The male likely dies shortly after losing the hectocotylus. Its habitat is therefore the mesopelagic (or twilight) zone. The widely distributed and numerous species of the family of lanternfish account for a great part of the overall biomass of deep sea fish: about 65%. Common among deep-sea anglerfish is the strong sexual dimorphism in melanocetids: while females may reach a length of 18 centimetres or more, males remain under 3 centimetres. After a larval and adolescent free-living stage, they spend the rest of their life parasitically attached to a female. [size of single organism: 20 cm] | Tiefseeanglerfische männchen. Described as “monstrous and misshapen animal,” it is the preferred meal for its predators such as skipjack, yellowfin and blackfin tuna and dolphin. The origin of Cerataspis monstrosa has been a mystery for more than 180 years. For nearly two centuries, researchers have tried to track down this larva that has shown up in the guts of other fish over time but found no adult counterpart. 2012 it is discovered that the “monster larva” and the deep-water aristeid shrimp known as Plesiopenaeus armatus are one in the same: larvae and adult forms of the same species. They may feed on on soft-bodied animals. “See and NOT be seen” seems to be the life motto of the deep-sea amphipod Cystisoma neptuni. The segments of its highly-specialised compound eyes collect rays of light in crystalline cones and lead them to the tips of light-guiding tubes that are connected to the optic nerves. Its transparent body prevents the crustacean from being detected and caught by predators. Phronima, the pram bug amphipod, is a small, translucent deep-sea hyperiid amphipod of the family Phronimidae. It resembles a shrimp with a head, eyes, jaws and clawed arms. Phronima are only seen in the wild at great depths. Phronima are carnivorous; they eat small plankton. P. sedentaria often uses dead salps for housing. Phronima served as an inspiration for the design of the Xenomorphs of the Alien film series.
