  • [Digital focus stacking] Thaumatomyrmex atrox are rarely encountered ants of Neotropical forests. They are specialists predators on millipedes in the order Polyxenida. These millipedes are miniature porcupines which entangle potential predators with detachable barbed setae. Thaumatomyrmex cope with bristle millipedes by grabbing them with its specialized mandibles. The mandibles are composed of three long spines which allow handling of the millipedes without getting in contact with the bristles. Picture was taken in cooperation with the "Staatl.   • [Digital focus stacking] Oecophylla sp. from Thailand - Weaver ants or Green ants (genus Oecophylla) are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae (order Hymenoptera). Weaver ants are obligately arboreal and are known for their unique nest building behaviour where workers construct nests by weaving together leaves using larval silk.

  • [Digital focus stacking] Cephalotes angustus Ants of the genus Cephalotes are restricted to the New World and all species live arboreal. They nest inside dead or living stems of plants. Pollen seems to be a major component of their diet. Recently S. Yanoviak and coworkers found that they are excellent gliders. Picture was taken in cooperation with the "Staatl.   • [Digital focus stacking] Odontomachus sp. Bei einer übermächtigen Bedrohung lassen die Ameisen ihre Kiefer gegen den Boden zuschnappen und katapultieren sich so in eine sichere Entfernung. Ein Muskelapparat am Kopf erzeugt die enorme Beschleunigungsenergie, die die Kieferzangen der Ameisen in weniger als einer Millisekunde auf Rekordgeschwindigkeit bringt. Die Muskeln übertragen ihre Kraft in einer Art Federmechanismus, der wie ein gespannter Bogen schlagartig seine Energie freisetzen kann. So erreicht dieses System seine explosive Beschleunigung, die durch eine herkömmliche Muskelkontraktion nicht möglich wäre. Die Rekord-Ameisen der Art Odontomachus sp. leben in weiten Teilen Mittel- und Südamerikas. Sie ernähren sich vorwiegend von Termiten und anderen Ameisenarten.   • [Digital focus stacking] Acanthognathus brevicornis is a morphologically exotic and relatively rare ant. The long and oddly shaped mandibles are characteristic for this group of ants. They feed on springtails and other small, soft-bodied arthropods. The ant on the picture is holding its mandibles in closed position. When prey is detected the mandibles open to 180° or more and are locked in that position. The ant approaches the prey and snaps the mandibles together in an extremely fast strike. During this strike the long spines at the distal end of the mandibles impale the prey. Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.  Picture was taken in cooperation with the "Staatl. Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe".

The most characteristic trait of army ants is the ability to conduct highly organized mass raids during which they remove large amounts of booty. For the army ant Eciton buchellii it has been estimated that a single colony removes up to 40g of dry animal matter and Eciton hamatum harvests 90.000 insects during one day. The raids of army ants are presumed to prevent the establishment of climax communities and thus to enhance arthropod diversity. It is therefore not surprising that army ants are considered keystone predators in the Neotropics..The picture shows the head of a soldier with sickle-shaped mandibles.   • [Digital focus stacking] Solenopsis geminata is one of several species that are known as ?fire ants?. The original distribution of these species is the (sub)tropical part of the New World but with the help of humans they have been introduced to almost all tropical regions of the world. .Solenopsis geminata feeds on almost anything. Their diet includes seeds which they gather and store in their nests. Workers of Solenopsis geminata are of various sizes ranging from 3-5 mm. The picture shows the head of a major worker with its massive mandibles. These mandibles are used to open seeds..Fire ants are famous for their potent sting. The sting can produce an immediate, intense pain followed by red swelling. In Brazil fire ants are locally known as ?Formiga-lava-pé? which roughly translates into ?Wash-your-feet-ant?.
