The Pacific hatchet fish (Argyropelecus affinis) lives at depths of 300 to 650 m. This species feeds on plankton organisms and performs diel vertical migrations (ascending at night to shallower waters). The huge eyes are an adaption to the twilight conditions in the deep sea. The ventral side of the Pacific hatchet fish is equipped with photophores emitting blue light to mask the fish when seen from below against the bit of light coming in from the surface (counterillumination). This blue light (wavelength 480 nm) is perfectly tuned to the residual light conditions in the typical habitat of this species.
