  • An alciopid polychaete everting its proboscis. In english, it's a worm sticking out its throat which have jaws at the end for grabbing dinner. The eye of Vanadis is about 1mm in diameter, including photosensory cells and distinct lens. The photoreceptors are about 80 µm long and 6µm in diameter, and formed of microvilli. Wals and Rayport (1977) detemined the spectral sensitivity from the electroretinogram (ERG) of eyes of Torrea candida, a surface worm, and Vanadis, found in the deep sea, and concluded that they have image-resolving eyes. Therefore, highly developed imaging eyes evolved in annelid polychaetes. Der ausstülpbare Rüssel vor den roten Agen dient dem Beutefang. Die ca. 1mm großen Augen sind erstaunlich hoch entwickelt und ermöglichen dem Wurm vermutlich sogar eine Wahrnehmung in Bildern.

  • Macrocypridina castanea are unmistakeable 'chocolate drop' ostracods with. shells about 7 mm long. Macrocypridina lives at depths of 800 m, where residual daylight is very weak. It has a pair of mobile apposition compound eyes with large lenses, wide rhabdoms and high acceptance angles, all of which contribute to a calculated sensitivity comparable with the superposition eyes of deep-water decapod crustaceans. The axes of the 27 ommatidia in each eye are not uniformly distributed in space, with a modest acute zone in the anteroventral region. In juveniles a distinct pigmented shield is visible and an enormous humour is located behind the lens. Larvae have only two sensory cells and the photoreceptors are of the ciliary type. In juveniles a striking feature is the shape of the retina. It is ribbon-shaped and new sensory cells are present which are arranged in three rows. The photoreceptors are of the ciliary type as well. Contrary to the arrangement in larvae, the ciliary plasmalemma in juveniles forms numerous lamellar stacks. In accordance with the sensory cells the stacks are organized in three parallel rows. The lamellae of adjacent stacks within a row overlap each other. The latter unique feature has not yet been found in any other representative of the Heteropoda. Dieses Weibchen trägt zwei Eisäcke am Hinterleib. Ruderfußkrebse, wissenschaftlich Copepoden genannt, sind mit etwa 14.000 in Süß- und Salzwasser lebenden Arten die artenreichste Gruppe innerhalb der Krebse. Sie sind in der marinen Nahrungskette das Bindeglied zwischen dem Phytoplankton und größeren Räubern. Die Copepoden stellen mindestens 60% der gesamten Biomasse des marinen Planktons.

Die Weibchen dieser Krebse leben parasitisch in Salpen. Ruderfußkrebse sind in der Nahrungskette das Bindeglied zwischen dem Phytoplankton und größeren Räubern im Meer.   • Deep Sea Viperfish (Chauliodus sloani) | Die ca. 30 cm langen Vipernfische (Chauliodus sloani) leben meist in den oberen 1000 m der Wassersäule, wobei sie tagsüber in größeren Tiefen zu finden sind und nachts aktiv aufsteigen. Sie haben zahlreiche Leuchtorgane, die einerseits der Tarnung im Gegenlicht dienen, andererseits aber auch Beutetiere anlocken können. Da Begegnungen mit größeren Beutetieren in der Tiefsee selten sind, kann der Vipernfisch es sich laum leisten, eine Chance zu vergeuden. Daher haben diese Fische furchteinflößend lange Zähne entwickelt, um ein sicheres Zupacken zu ermöglichen.

  • This deep sea amphipod genus is particularly renowned for its house-building. This transparent organism feeds upon free-living, planktonic sea squirts and salps. It devours the internal soft body parts of its live prey and is then left surrounded by a tough, transparent husk of tunicin. It is this outer casing that it then modifies to form an open-ended barrel, the final shape of which is particular to the species of Phronima and the salp in question. <br /> <br /> This macabre activity seems to be conducted by the female amphipods, and in time eggs or hatchlings are deposited as a saddle on the inner wall of the barrel. Here they remain and grow, aerated by a constant flow of water that moves through the barrel as the female swims through the water column. With advancing age comes the spirit of adventure and juveniles start to stray from their brood site towards the margins of the barrel.
